Qualification Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the technical skills and knowledge required to work in relational practice within mental health. It offers an opportunity to build upon experience gained in community work by engaging with a theoretical framework, enabling learners to both challenge and develop their practice.

This vocational qualification is designed to provide trainees with the necessary self-awareness, knowledge base, and practical application skills to work effectively with clients experiencing mental distress, as well as diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health conditions, across various settings using a relational approach. The programme enables trainees to achieve and demonstrate learning outcomes that reflect postgraduate-level self-directed research and development, depth of understanding, critical awareness, articulation of knowledge, professional best practice, and applied therapeutic skills.

Entry Requirements

  1. A high level of critical self-reflexivity, grounded in enhanced self-awareness, which facilitates the management, understanding, and therapeutic use of emotional processes arising in therapeutic settings with individuals who have experienced significant trauma.
  2. The ability to engage effectively and ethically with clients experiencing considerable emotional and psychological distress, including those presenting with characteristics of major psychiatric diagnoses, such as personality disorders and psychoses.
  3. An in-depth understanding of human development and the mind’s functioning, examined through the dual perspectives of neurobiology and psychodynamic theory.
  4. A critical grasp of contemporary mental health models and treatments, as well as their role within science, culture, and society.
  5. A range of skills enabling the application of this knowledge to daily practice as relational mental health practitioners, alongside the capacity to articulate the reasoning underpinning their approach.
  6. The ability to work reflectively and thoughtfully, engaging with clients in an egalitarian and collaborative manner.
  7. An ethical and professional approach to supporting individuals in distress—alongside their families and professional colleagues—as well as an awareness of the significance of ethical practice and professional conduct.
  8. A clear comprehension of the core content of each module across all six Units of the diploma course, along with the capacity to implement this knowledge in practice.
