Qualifi Level 3 Diploma in Massage Therapy

Qualification Overview

The Level 3 Diploma qualification has been designed principally to offer a structured training programme for centres delivering the off-the-job training for apprentices enrolled on the Wellbeing and Holistic Therapist apprenticeship standard. The qualification maps the skills, knowledge, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard into units and assessment criteria, aligned with the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Units

To achieve this qualification a learner must successfully complete seven units, all six mandatory units, and at least one unit from the optional section:

  • Client consultation and profiling
  • Body Massage
  • Holistic head, neck and shoulder massage
  • Thermal therapy massage

Learning Outcomes

  1. Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology – Learners will develop an understanding of the structure and function of body systems, their interdependence, as well as absolute and relative contraindications and related pathologies.
  2. Implementing Health, Safety, and Hygiene – Learners will apply advanced knowledge of health, safety, and hygiene practices by researching relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. They will analyse and refine these policies to ensure safe and hygienic practices within the salon, for both practitioners and clients during treatments.
  3. Client Consultation and Profiling – This underpins all practical technical units. Learners will conduct thorough consultations to create detailed client lifestyle profiles, enabling them to design personalised wellbeing experiences and holistic therapy treatment plans tailored to individual needs and desired outcomes.
  4. Holistic Head, Neck, and Shoulder Massage – Drawing from traditional Indian head massage principles, learners will acquire the skills to deliver tailored treatments for the scalp, face, neck, décolleté, and upper shoulders, adapting techniques to suit client requirements.
  5. Thermal Therapy Massage – Learners will develop the expertise to perform body massage treatments using thermal therapy equipment, including handheld tools or preparations that require heating or cooling before application.
  6. Wellbeing and Holistic Therapy – Learners will gain the skills to provide bespoke holistic treatments, blending essential oils to create therapeutic experiences tailored to individual client needs.
  7. Advanced Massage Techniques – Learners will explore alternative massage methods, such as manual acupressure or lymphatic drainage, and the use of non-thermal handheld tools.
  8. Body Massage – Learners will master the fundamentals of Swedish-style body massage, including techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, frictions, and vibrations. They will learn to adapt rhythm, speed, and pressure to ensure client comfort and achieve optimal results.
  9. Thai Massage – Learners will study the traditional Eastern principles, historical context, and cultural significance of Thai massage. They will develop the skills to perform techniques that blend yoga, acupressure, and shiatsu to enhance wellbeing, balance, and harmony.

Entry Requirements

  • This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years and older who have achieved a Level 2 qualification or apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy or have appropriate industry experience for direct entry at Level 3. Centres are responsible for ensuring that this qualification is suited to the ability of learners.
  • The qualification has been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access and progression. Entry to the qualification will be through centre interview and learners will be assessed on an individual basis.
