Qualification Overview

The Level 3 Diploma qualification has been designed principally to offer a structured programme of study for training centres delivering the off-the-job training component for apprentices enrolled on the Wellbeing and Holistic Therapist apprenticeship standard. The qualification aligns with the skills, knowledge, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard, mapping these into units and assessment criteria based on the relevant National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Additionally, this qualification can be taken as a standalone course, providing learners with the essential practical skills, knowledge, and understanding required to pursue employment within the beauty, spa, wellness, and holistic therapy sectors.

Units

To achieve this qualification a learner must select and successfully complete four units. This includes three mandatory units, and at least one unit from the optional section:

Anatomy, physiology and pathology
Implement health, safety, and hygiene
Client consultation and profiling

Optional

Holistic head, neck and shoulder massage
Thermal therapy massage
Body Massage

Learning Outcomes

Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology – Learners will develop an understanding of the structure and function of the body systems, their interdependence, as well as absolute and relative contraindications and related pathologies.
Implementing Health, Safety, and Hygiene – Learners will apply their advanced knowledge of health, safety, and hygiene practices by researching relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. They will analyse and refine these policies to ensure effective implementation within the salon, for themselves, and for clients during treatments.
Client Consultation and Profiling – This fundamental skill supports all practical technical units in the qualification. Learners will conduct thorough consultations to develop detailed client lifestyle profiles, enabling them to design tailored wellbeing experiences and holistic therapy treatment plans that meet individual client needs and achieve desired outcomes.
Holistic Head, Neck, and Shoulder Massage – Based on traditional Indian head massage principles, learners will acquire the skills and knowledge to deliver tailored treatments for the scalp, face, neck, décolleté, and upper shoulders, adapting techniques to suit client requirements.
Thermal Therapy Massage – Learners will gain the expertise to perform body massage treatments using thermal therapy equipment, including handheld tools or preparations that require heating or cooling before application.
Body Massage – Learners will master the foundational techniques of Swedish-style body massage. They will explore the benefits and effects of massage, key techniques (such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, frictions, and vibrations), and the importance of adjusting rhythm, speed, and pressure to ensure client comfort, satisfaction, and optimal results.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years and older who have achieved a Level 2 qualification or apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy or have appropriate industry experience for direct entry at Level 3. Centres are responsible for ensuring that this qualification is suited to the ability of learners.
The qualification has been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access and progression. Entry to the qualification will be through centre interview and learners will be assessed on an individual basis.
